Farmers reporting Feedback From The Field this week continue to make progress planting 2017 crops, noting a slight uptick in conditions too. But worries remain focused on the fate of fields on either end of the growing region, from the northern Plains to the eastern Midwest.
To the north and west, dry conditions are the threat, with concerns sparking spring wheat futures to test $6 this week.
“Some crops struggling to find enough moisture to germinate,” wrote a grower in south central North Dakota who estimated corn 80% emerged and soybeans 40% out of the ground.
Other producers noted problems with spring wheat, while a farmer from eastern Montana said his area received just .04 inch of moisture since March 15.
“Winter wheat crops are dying,” was the assessment.
Rain and cold was the issue to the east in the Midwest, where low populations and slow germination are issues.
“Have some replanting to do,” said an operator in eastern Ohio facing a wet forecast. “Don't know when we'll finish!”
Still, not everyone in troubled areas was having trouble. A producer in eastern South Dakota rated corn and soybeans in excellent shape.
“Crops are really starting to take off.”
