Climate Corporation expands with acquisition

Monsanto's Climate Corporation buys fledgling 640 Labs to expand data acquisition efforts.

Climate Corporation announced this week it is acquiring 640 Labs, an ag technology startup based in Chicago. According to a corporate release, the 640 Labs team will join The Climate Corporation "strengthening the company's efforts to build the industry's leading data science platform for farmers."

Started by Corbett Kull and Craig Rubb, 640 Labs leverages the power of analytics using mobile technologies and cloud computing to help farmers capture and store in-field data. The 640 Labs tool connects to a machine's ISOBUS connection and can collect a range of information to share at that point. The company's analytic tools are then used to do a deep dive into the data a farmer collects.

According to the release the Climate Corporation will maintain the Chicago office, where 640 Labs will remain. David Friedberg, CEO of The Climate Corporation comments that turning farmer data "into valuable tools for farmers requires a combination of top software engineers, statisticians and specialized disciplines from agronomists to climatologists."

The media release also nots that in the coming year, The Climate Corporation expects to announce new products or services to be offered as a result of the acquisition. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
