ConAgra, the parent company of brands such as Slim Jim, Healthy Choice, Banquet and Chef Boyardee, announced today a move to a crate-free pork supply by 2022, according to a release from the Humane Society of the United States.

The company, which is headquartered in Omaha, Neb., produces both consumer and commercial foods and employs more than 26,000 people. The company also sells nearly 12.3 million packages of food products daily and generated more than $13 a year in net sales during FY 2012.

"As part of our long-standing commitment to the humane treatment and handling of animals, ConAgra Foods supports the elimination of gestation stall housing for sows," ConAgra's statement to HSUS said. "We are asking our pork suppliers to present actionable plans by 2017 that address both the elimination of gestation stalls and creation of traceability systems within the pork supply chain. We recognize that implementing a phase-out may be a long-term process, and could take up to 10 years."

Food company Hillshire Brands announced a similar decision Friday, joining Oscar Mayer, McDonalds, Burger King and Kroger in a move to crate-free supply chains.
