Federal Funding to Improve Food Safety

USDA issues $14 million dollars to focus on food safety.

Undersecretary of Agriculture for Food Safety Richard Raymond told the National Restaurant Association Convention Tuesday that the U.S. has the safest food system and it is getting safer everyday. One of the ways USDA is helping the cause of food safety is with grants to universities across the country to fund research.

"The University of Georgia has received a large grant to determine how long E. Coli can survive in soil and looking at the cross contamination from cattle to spinach to lettuce; those advances will be very helpful," Raymond says.

This is just one of the grants issued to 17 universities totaling $14 million to be used to improve food safety and reduce the number of cases of food borne illness.
