Temperatures were already topping 100 degrees Wednesday over the noon hour in parts of Kansas, as a heat wave continues to bake the Plains this week. But growers sounding off so far this week on Feedback From The Field appear most concerned about their fate in the eastern Midwest, where crops were already stressed.
“Very dry corn is going to take a huge yield hit this week,” reported a producer in northwest Ohio. “Dry soil plus 95 degree heat and pollination is underway. Not a good combination.”
To the north in Michigan south of Battle Creek, a producer said corn is starting to tassel and beans are blooming amid challenging conditions. “We are short on moisture. Pastures are brown, lawns are brown.”
While greensnap and dry fields were a challenge in eastern Nebraska, a grower in North Dakota was crossing his fingers. “Three-inch rains received the week of July 10 were critical,” said the producer.
But big rains over parts of the growing region were helping fields withstand the hot temperatures.
A producer south of St. Louis said most of his ground had ample moisture. “Roots have caught up to the nitrogen with the dry spell in June. Have had over 5" of rain since July 1 so we are looking good at the moment. Will need more rain in August to finish off the early beans and good weather in September for the double crop beans...but so far so good!”
