The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, is expecting to close six locks on the Mississippi River due to rising river levels.
Water levels overtopping lock gates are making the locks inoperable, the Corps says.
Closures include locks 16-22 with the exception of lock 19. Lock 16 and 17 at Illinois City, Ill., and New Boston Ill., will close Friday, while lock 18 at Gladstone, Ill., will close Saturday.
Lock 20 at Canton, Mo., 22 at Saverton, Mo., and 21 at Quincy, Ill., and will close Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
The Corps does not expect additional lock closures, though it says it is too soon to forecast re-open dates for the affected locks.
Boaters and recreational water-users are advised to use caution as well; several recreation areas are also under temporary closure.
The closures mark the third time the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Rock Island District has activated its Emergency Operations Center since April.
