On Friday, soybean rust was found on soybeans in Richardson and Otoe counties in southeastern Nebraska. This is the first ever finding of soybean rust in Nebraska.
Fortunately nearly all soybeans in Nebraska are in the R7 to R8 growth stages, so the disease will not impact yield and won't require any management or treatment. Sentinel test plots have fully matured so scouting efforts are continuing in later maturing fields that still have green leafs.
The find in Nebraska followed several discoveries last week in Arkansas, Mississippi and Kansas. Currently rust has been found in 169 counties in 15 states this year, and that number could increase as storms expected to move through the Midwest this week may spread the spores farther north and east.
