Pilot Projects Bode Well for National Animal ID

USDA releases reports on National Animal Identification System pilot projects conducted in 2004.

In 2004, a variety of pilot projects were conducted to test technologies and procedures that could be used in the National Animal Identification System. USDA released reports from those projects Friday.

"The pilot projects demonstrate that NAIS will work well and greatly benefit America's producers.  These concrete examples of the system's capabilities, tried and proven in the field, are a critical step forward in our efforts to implement this important program," says Bruce Knight, undersecretary of USDA's marketing and regulatory programs.

Many of the projects tested real-world scenarios, integrating the system with commerce.

The report can be accessed on USDA's NAIS Web site at www.usda.gov/nais
