Sharing the Farm Equipment Load

Sharing the Farm Equipment Load

Many young farmers jointly own machinery to gain an edge.

Machinery costs are one of the larger costs faced by farmers, but many are looking to joint ownership to strengthen their net return. Smaller operators improve efficiency and new farmers can still enjoy the advantage of owning a full line of equipment. Iowa State University developed a spreadsheet for managing the contributions and returns to each joint owner for the equipment to maintain a level playing field and a healthy working relationship. The spreadsheet can provide the cornerstone for a healthy written agreement between those sharing ownership.

We're featuring the spreadsheet as our Farm Futures Spreadsheet of the Month. The 155 kilobyte spreadsheet should work with Excel 2000, 2002, 2007, 2010 or Excel XP. You can download it by clicking on the link below.

Do you have a spreadsheet that's made a difference on your operation that you'd be willing to share with other readers? Drop us a line at [email protected] with a description of the spreadsheet. We'll pay $75 if we feature your farmer-written non-commercial program as our Spreadsheet of the Month.
