The U.S. corn harvest advanced to 24% as of Sunday and soybean harvest went to 40%, but both were quite a ways behind the five-year averages of 43% and 53%, the USDA Crop Progress and Condition report indicated Tuesday.

Crop development and harvest have been delayed by a cool summer and fall rains.

Year-ago numbers on all crops were not available because a lapse in federal funding then prompted the suspension of 2013 crop progress reports for the weeks ending Oct. 6 and Oct. 13.

The corn rating was unchanged from a week ago at 74% good to excellent and soybeans stayed at 73%.

The Kansas state report said showers of an inch or more fell over much of the state. While the rain delayed harvest  of fall crops  and wheat planting it improved topsoil moisture  to 9% surplus, 66% adequate, 20% short and 5% very short from the previous week's3%, 63%, 26%, and 8%.

USDA discontinued for the season spring wheat harvest updates.
