USDA Crop Progress: U.S. Corn Harvest Jumps to 65%

Winter wheat 90% planted, 77% emerged in USDA Crop Progress Report

Combines were rolling last week and through the weekend with the U.S. corn harvest now 65% done, a nearly 20 point jump from a week ago, and just 8 points back from the five-year average,  USDA said in its Crop Progress Report on Monday.

A surge in harvest had been expected because of clear weather most of last week and through the weekend.

The soybean harvest surged 13 points to 83% done to match the five-year average pace.

The harvest paces topped expectations as Farm Futures had forecast 59% for corn and 79% for soybeans and analysts in a Reuters poll, on average, expected 60% for corn and 81% for soybeans.

The harvests of both crops were far enough along that USDA discontinued its condition ratings.

In Iowa, the top corn and soybean producer, corn harvest was 61%, a 25 point jump from a week earlier, and compares with 72% a year ago and the 75% average. Soybeans were  91% harvested versus 94% a year ago and the 90% average.

Winter wheat 59% good/excellent vs 63% year ago
Winter wheat planting was at 90% as of Sunday versus 90% a year ago and the 89% average.

The crop was 77% emerged versus 76% a year ago and the 72% average. It was rated 59% good to excellent, unchanged from last week and compared with 63% a year ago.

Kansas, the largest wheat producer, was at 93% planted and 82% emerged versus the averages of 94% and 80%.  Wheat there was rated 64% good to excellent.

Cotton: 50% harvested, 95% had bolls open
The cotton harvest at 50% was ahead of 2013's 42% but trailed the 51% average. Bolls were open on 95% of the crop, unchanged from a year ago and slightly behind the 97% average.  Crop condition stayed at 48% good to excellent, with excellent gaining 1 point to 11% and good losing 1 to 37%.

Sorghum was 65% harvested and 94% mature, versus the respective year ago numbers of 74% and 99% and averages of 70% and 95%.
