Utilization of Cloning Discussed in Argentina

Undersecretary Knight is visiting Argentina this week.

USDA Undersecretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Bruce Knight has traveled to Argentina this week for discussions on the issue of cloning.

"I was invited by my counterparts in Argentina to share with them the efforts we've been making on the decisions on utilization of clones and cloning technology in animals," Knight says.

Last year the Food and Drug Administration made the decision that cloning technology was safe and appropriate for use in food animals. However Knight says the U.S. has continued a moratorium on cloned animals entering into meat and milk while other countries have viewed their own risk assessments and looked at their own regulatory regimes to move in that direction.

"We've been working with a number of those countries," Knight says. "Argentina is now at the stage where they are looking at what their regulatory approval should be; what they would need to be able to make a very similar decision on how to advance the technology."

During the four days in Argentina, Knight expects to discuss the lessons learned as well as the opportunities and the options associated with cloning technology.
