The beef industry is diverse, filled with a range of supporters from the ranchers that raise calves to the finishers that push for a consistent product that ends up in the grocer's meat department. But what about young consumers, the future of the industry?
This spring the beef checkoff launched a new video blog contest aimed at engaging youth to tell the beef story using YouTube. The popular video site has become a haven for more than cute cat videos, it's a social media and message tool a wide range of groups have used.
The grand prize winner of the checkoff video contest is Jason Girouard, son of Rebecca and David Girouard, Brimfield, Mass. This Tantasqua Regional High School student will receive $750 and a trip to an annual Cattle Industry Convention.
The checkoff set pretty simple contest ground rules. Video entries had to be two minutes or less and focus on one of eight beef related topics, including common beef misconceptions, cattle care and beef's nutritional value. Entries were judged on creativity, topic choice, content accuracy and how beef was positioned.
In a release announcing the winners, Girouard says "this contest really stuck out to me because beef has been a huge part of my life. I've been really active lately with track and swimming at my school, and like I said in my video, eating right has been essential in my daily routine."
The active student, who works out daily and runs 15 miles per week talks in his fast-paced video about the role of beef in his diet and pushes through some key misconceptions - including the "corn fed' controversy of beef. Second prize went to Sierra Shea Angell, daughter of Russ and Sally Thomas of Centralia, Mo. The University of Missouri student and Team Beef runner receives $250 for her efforts to showcase the power of protein in her short video.
Third prize was awarded to Parker Wade Crouse, son of Marion and Patricia Crouse of Woody, Calif. The Valley Oaks Charter High School student receives $100 for his video which focused on the power of cattle as recyclers and firefighters.
