Feedback From The Field - Oct. 20, 2018

Farmers start returning to fields, don’t like what they see.

Better conditions this week allowed some growers to get back into the fields after a week or more delay. But farmers reporting Feedback From The Field didn’t like what they saw following too much rain, and in some cases snow.

“Our fields are very muddy, and access to them is almost impossible,” said a producer in southwestern Nebraska on Friday.

“Seven inches of snow on beans and corn, unknown loss, plus 3 inches of rain prior to snow,” added another Cornhusker. “Fields are a soggy mess.”

Overall ratings reported over the past week dropped sharply, slipping below average for the first time since early in the spring. Yield estimates also tumbled, taking the average for October down to just 175 bushels per acre for corn with soybeans falling to 50 bpa.

And for most growers filing comments over the past week, those estimates are guesses as they try to figure out how much fields deteriorated.

“We combined 28 acres of corn and yield is down 12 bushels from when we were in field last,” wrote another Nebraska farmer. “This is bad, really bad.”

A north central Iowa producer said Friday was the first day “nothing got stuck in a week.” Soybean yields were down 10 bpa due to diseases.

High moisture content was noted by another Iowa producer, with corn running over 20%. “Mother Nature, we need some heat, not crop flatting storms,” was the plea.

Even growers making progress in the field reported yields that were good, not great. A farmer in eastern Illinois finished 1,200 acres, finding 180-bushel corn and 50-bushel soybeans.
