According to the Natural Agricultural Statistics Service, the
Market hog inventory was up 1% from last year and 2% from last quarter at 56.6 million, while breeding inventory, at 6.08 million, was up 2% from last year and saw a slight increase from last quarter.
The June-August 2006 pig crop was up 1 percent from 2005 and up 2 percent from 2004 and is currently at 26.7 million head. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 2.92 million head, up slightly from 2005 and up 1 percent from 2004. The average pigs saved per litter increased slightly in the June-August 2006 period from last year. Pigs saved per litter by size of operation ranged from 7.70 for operations with 1-99 hogs and pigs to 9.20 for operations with more than 5,000 hogs and pigs.
The number of hogs under contract owned by operations with over 5,000 head remained at 39 percent of the total inventory, the same as 2005.
